19th-century commode made in the French Louis XVI style, following the designs of the celebrated royal cabinetmaker (ébéniste) Jean-Henri Riesener (1734-1806).
Key Features:
- Marble Top: The commode is topped with a thick slab of variegated green marble with a shaped edge.
- Storage: It includes two drawers along the top and a large two-door cabinet below, providing ample storage.
- Central Design: The main doors feature a large, semicircular panel of wood inlay (marquetry). This picture-in-wood shows a “martial trophy” theme with a lion-headed shield, flags, and spears set against a background of burled wood.
- Gilt-Bronze Details: The piece is decorated with ornate, gilded bronze (ormolu) mounts. This includes decorative pulls on the drawers, details on the columns, and trim work.
- Legs and Feet: The commode stands on four feet – elaborately designed to look like lion’s paws, a classic feature of this high-end style.
